Joost van der Westhuizen | 20 February 1971 – 6 February 2017

Joost Heystek van der Westhuizen passed away at his home surrounded by his loved ones on Monday 6th February 2017. Joost was best known for his incredible rugby career and in recent years has shown the same bravery and strength in his fight against Motor Neuron Disease. He was diagnosed with a form of MND, known as Amytrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in early 2011. Enjoy Life with MND Yesterday I celebrated my 4th year living with MND since the 1st symptoms appeared in my body. This however, did not stop me from going on a fantastic holiday, with my wife and carer, to Durban. Travelling is extremely challenging since I was confined to a wheelchair but with the assistance of a dedicated taxi service (S-Drive), the airline staff (Kulula), my wife and carer I managed to get to Durban safely on 6 February 2016 to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary.
